Load of Rubbish – reliable, economical junk removal
Chris Rouse got more from Fanshawe College than simply his Marketing diploma. He also got the idea for a business he now runs and co-owns with his father.
“My class did a business project at Fanshawe,” says Rouse, 22. “I did mine on a junk removal business and then a year-and-a-half ago, we got serious about following through and creating it.”
The result is Load of Rubbish, a cheeky name for a junk removal business with a fresh approach. If the idea for the company came from Chris’ school project, the name itself came from a moment of frustration experienced by his father, Kelvin Rouse, owner of Rouse Roofing for the last 27 years.
“I think I was in a traffic jam, trying to get somewhere, and I said, ‘This is a load of rubbish.’ I knew right away that would be the name of the business.”
It’s more than just the business name that distinguishes Load of Rubbish from competitors, however.
For starters, the business is not a franchise. It looks for all the world like it must be, with professional looking graphics, vehicles and uniforms. But all those are the creation of the Rouses, junior and senior.
Another difference is pricing. Without franchise fees to pay or a lot of overhead, they keep their prices 30-40 per cent lower than major competitors. And unlike many of those competitors, they put all their pricing right on their website.
“We believe in up front pricing,” says Chris. “We want each customer’s experience to be a positive one. In fact, we have a 100 per cent satisfaction guarantee. If something isn’t right, we will make it right or the customer doesn’t pay a dime.”
The company also offers a price match guarantee that promises to best any junk removal price by 10 per cent.
“We don’t want people to be worried about calling to inquire about the prices,” Kelvin says. “You can get a very good idea of what it will cost from the website, and then we come and do a detailed estimate. The price doesn’t change after that. We do what we promise.”
Prices are all-inclusive, which covers the loading of items by two men and all costs and fees associated with transportation, dumping and recycling.
The company puts very little of what it removes in landfill. Instead, it donates usable items to charities and recycles many items including metal and electronics.
“Much of what we do is estate work,” Chris says. Working with Sharon Gunn of Seniors in Transition, they help people with the logistics of handling estates, after a death or if a senior is moving to a smaller living space. “We recommend people who can help with all those issues, and we handle removing items ourselves.”
The business uses both a large dump truck and a covered trailer, so items to be reused are always protected from the elements – something that makes materials more valuable to charities like Habitat for Humanity and the Salvation Army.
Pick-ups can be booked online, where there is a calendar that lays out what times are available. When the Rouses book a time, they show up at that time and not a moment later. “That’s all part of giving the best customer service,” Chris says. “We don’t give people a window of time when we’ll show up. We come when we say we’ll come. Period.”
With that kind of commitment to customer service and the values of a family-owned business, Load of Rubbish has been attracting lots of attention and many satisfied customers – exactly what Chris’ business plan suggested would happen.
